Do we need to re-think how observational research is done?

In its latest publication, using the example of COPD (paper available here), a team of Ingress-health real-world evidence experts explored whether the use of a specific data source strongly influences results of RWE studies. Specifically, for more than 500 patients data on COPD diagnosis & treatment patterns were collected in physician practices. Additionally, for the very same patients and periods data were collected based on a claims data bases. By comparing primary and claims data, the team observed substantial differences. The authors conclude that the decision which database to use strongly influences its results. They recommend to run linked databases to minimize the risk of missing data.
